Also, because we had problems with this last time, "You should play X character more/more than your other characters" is not valid crit. However, if you notice that someone is pretty obviously only playing enough to get past Activity Check on a consistent basis, you may mention that. The two things are distinctly different, so before you go firing off about it, use the tag system to make sure you're right and that it's actually a consistent problem. If we see people abusing this, we can freeze that thread, too.

[OOC: secret submission post!]

Most of you probably know how this goes: submit your secret pictures here! You can either use a link or the url or post the picture - whatever. This post is screened - we'll have a post in the OOC comm later next week to reveal who made each secret (if you want to reveal; if not, don't worry about it). You do need to be logged in to submit secrets, though; this is to make sure you're actually a member of the community, among other things.

This post will be closed Saturday morning, May 30th at 12:00am, and the secret post will go up in the main comm Saturday afternoon.

Division 12's Handy Dandy Apping Guide (for Newbies and other people)

Because we've found lately that we're declining a lot of apps based on the same things over and over again, we - the mods of Microcosm - thought it might be a good idea to make a post about what sorts of things we look for when judging apps.

In General:
Good Grammar and Spelling
This doesn't just mean using spellcheck on your app (which at least Firefox does automatically). It means reading back over your app to make sure that it makes sense and that typos are kept to a minimum. If you're not good with this sort of thing, you can even get someone else that is to look over your app before you post it to check for spelling and grammar mistakes. While we don't want to make apps a super serious ordeal, we do believe that an app is like a job application - you should be selling yourself and your playing abilities to us. One of the easiest ways to do that and put your best foot forward is to make sure your spelling and grammar is on point before you submit your app.

Coherence
Does your app make sense? Did you respond to the different portions of the app as asked? Does one paragraph lead into the next in a logical manner?

Length
While you can make your app as short as one LJ comment, we really do encourage not making your app 8 or 9 comments long. In fact, it's our opinion in general that if you've got more than two comments' worth of Background and Personality, it's probably way too long. In the future, we may consider declining apps solely on the basis that they've run over four comments, so keep this in mind when writing your apps - ask yourself if what you've got to say about the character is really necessary enough to risk getting the app declined.

Point in Canon
While we generally don't care what point in canon you take your character from, there are some cases that will raise our eyebrows. We also don't really care about taking a character from mid-way through the canon, and there is nothing that says you need to take the character from the latest point in canon (or the end of canon if it's over). You are also allowed to update your character if they're from a continuing canon (within reason - no more than once a month or so. If you're unsure, contact the mods). However, we're going to be a bit wary if you're taking a character from a 100 chapter manga from chapter two. (Of course, if it's a 100 chapter series and most of the action takes place before chapter two and the rest is flashback, you can always let us know about it.)

Personality and Background
Background
We really only need a general overview of the canon background, and that's to have context for the rest of the app. We don't need the character's life history or the entire plot of their series - we just need a general idea of what the series is about and the character's place in it.

EXAMPLE
Good: Samurai Warriors is what would happen if you took the Sengoku Period of Japanese history, turned it into a hack-and-slash video game full of bizarre weapons like kickballs and parasols, threw in a shredding guitar soundtrack, added a dash of Love and Friendship (tm), threw it all into a blender, and hit 'puree'.

Bad: Samurai Warriors covers the Sengoku Period of Japanese history, which was marked by warfare and strife. Oda Nobunaga began his bloody campaign across the land by killing his own brother and then uniting Owari province. Later he... [insert Nobunaga's life story/wiki article here]
The point to take away from this is, you're writing an app, not a school report. What we're looking for is a general overview, not a detailed essay.

Personality
This is half the meat and potatoes of your app (along with the Sample Post itself). What we want to see is that you understand your character's motivations and how they relate to their actions. More than that, we want to see that you can communicate the general impression you should get from that character to other players. If your character is a creepy scientist who secretly has a heart of gold, we should see the creepy part more clearly than the heart of gold part - after all, that's your first impression of the character and that's what you should communicate first.

EXAMPLE:
Good: Suigintou is the sadistic, cruel eldest sister of the Rozen Maidens. She loves taunting her younger sisters, and in particular, Shinku. Even the person closest to her, her contract Meg, is subject to her mockery and cruelty. As such, she often seems angry and derisive of the world around her and all in it.

Bad: Suigintou was the first doll created by Rozen, who then left her on a shelf so he could concentrate on her younger sisters. Her first memories upon waking herself were of Rozen showering Shinku with love; as a result, she has a deep-seated jealousy toward her. She then animated herself without the aid of a Rosa Mystica through the sheer power of her will and her love for Rozen.
The difference between the samples, while both are technically true, is that in the first sample we see how Suigintou is portrayed by the series and what other characters in the game are going to see on a daily basis. In the second, we see what the viewer of the series sees in her backstory and her inner motivation; she's portrayed more as a sympathetic victim than as a willing sadist. While both are important parts of her character, the first one shows us more of what we need to know of how she's going to be played in a multi-fandom setting and what nearly every character interacting with her will see. Which one an apper chooses to focus on is crucial to showing how they'll play the character.

Character Relationships
While it helps to show us how your character relates to those in his/her canon, an over-reliance on those canon relationships tends to make an app come off as hollow - it looks more like you're apping another character's accessory than your own character. If it helps, try to write the app as though there are no others from your canon in the game (and if there aren't, try to write it as though the reader is unfamiliar with it... because chances are, we are).

EXAMPLE
Good: Kiryuu Nanami is the adoring younger sister of the student council president Kiryuu Touga - and she doesn't hesitate to let anyone around her know it. Because of her somewhat pampered background and social status, she tends to treat others as though they're far less important than her, even her devoted and slavish clique of followers.

Bad: Kiryuu Nanami is the adoring younger sister of student council president Kiryuu Touga. She tends to follow his every move, making sure to keep all other girls at a safe distance from him at all times (which he circumvents with hilarious regularity). She's even been known to watch him in the shower, just to be absolutely sure.
Again, while both examples are technically true, the first example shows Nanami as her own person and how she treats those around her. The second section shows her as Touga's Little Sister, Nanami, and focuses exclusively on how she relates to him. The second sample begs the question "If there isn't a Touga in the game, what is Nanami going to do with herself?"

Relating to the World Around You
What your personality section should show us, above all, is how your character is going to relate to everyone else in the game. Not their canonmates, not vague descriptions of how they function in canon, but how they're going to act when they're in a game full of strangers.

EXAMPLE
Good: Lina Inverse makes a living intimidating those around her. She's infamous for being violent, short-tempered, greedy, ravenous, and more than a touch insane. In reality, however, she's... okay, she's most of those things, but not in a bad way! She spends most of her spare time robbing bandits and helping the poor and downtrodden... for a price! Ever the merchant's daughter, she's not one to pass up a deal or try to make a little extra cash wherever she can.

Bad: Lina Inverse spends her time traveling with her companions Gourry, Amelia, and Zelgadis. While she's bossy with them, she genuinely does care about them - if you can get past her greedy and somewhat abusive antics.
Again, both are true, but the first example tells us what to expect in a multi-fandom RPG, while the second example tells us what to expect from Lina's interactions with canonmates. If Lina has no canonmates, or all her canonmates drop, how do we know what she's going to do with the rest of the game at large?

Sexual Orientation
In general, what we're looking for is a clear understanding of what you see in the character. Use the canon to back you up! We understand that your character probably isn't going to get their first choice of who to sleep with in the game - how will they deal with that? Do they consider themselves straight, but aren't comfortable enough with the opposite sex to sleep around? Would they consider it a betrayal to sleep with someone of the same sex as their significant other? Is there a close friend of the same sex that they'd make an exception to their usually straight ways for? There are as many different responses to this question as there are characters who can be apped. Regardless of what you view their sexuality as, all we really ask for is that you explain your position well. Here are a few things we don't want to see, though:
"My character is normally straight, but would become bi/gay if they were in close proximity to/chained to/genderswapped with/drunk/high/etc someone of the same sex".
--Sexuality doesn't magically change when you get a little liquor in you, nor does being in the same general vicinity as someone of the same sex magically make you gay. If you have to use excuses like these to get your character's sexuality to go a certain way, we ask that you seriously question how defensible your position is here.

"Although he has a canon girlfriend, he also has a close relationship with his brother/best friend/cousin, so I'm going to call him bisexual/gay"
-- Again, having a friend of the same sex doesn't necessarily mean you have romantic feelings for them, so you'll forgive us our skepticism with this one. This one could be defensible, with more information, though. If you genuinely see this as the case for your character, it's one you're going to have to explain a bit.

"This character is very committed to appearing normal, and for that reason, even though he goes on numerous dates and shows some interest in women, I am choosing to interpret this as him being very far in the closet and actually gay."
--Unfortunately, unless the story is actually about the main character's struggles with coming out, this is probably not going to be true. And since we do ask that everyone adhere as closely to their canon as possible, this one is probably going to get declined out of hand.

Sample Post
This is the other side of the meat and potatoes of your app. This is where you show us your stuff - how we can expect you to play, what you intend to do with the character when you get them in the game, how creative your posts are going to be, the whole nine yards. We've seen some truly creative takes on this: a character from hundreds of years ago coming outside and seeing cars for the first time (and trying to fight them), a character beginning her first formal sexual encounter with a stranger, a film-noir style sample that makes things like lighting cigarettes seem gritty. So I'll just go through a couple things we don't really want to see.
- Posts that only cover actions. Even if they're in third person, giving us a description of your character's morning routine upon waking up in a strange world doesn't tell us much about what we can expect from your posts. You can fix this by simply adding touches that make the post undeniably about your character - what are they thinking, what would be their unique reactions to their situation?

- Posts that could happen anywhere. We ask that the sample posts be written with this game setting in particular in mind, and there are a lot of places it can take place! But we have problems when the app is so non-descript that it could literally happen in any other game.

- Posts that don't match the description you've given us of the character in the Personality section.

- Posts that are half-or-more made up of events from your canon or events that don't take place in the game setting. We don't mind a little set-up or background, but if the majority of the app is from another setting, how do we know what to expect in your playing?
I think that covers everything, although we may add more to this as we think of it. Good luck, and good apping!
